On Monday morning, January 29, 2024, the Clinical Biochemistry Branch at the College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, discussed the doctoral thesis titled (Study of the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid and 5.4.1 triphosphate inositol on insulin resistance) by student Ismail Sadiq Khashan. The thesis was completed under the supervision of Professor Dr. Maysaa Jalal Majeed, and a discussion committee headed by Professor Dr. Basil Awaid Saleh, and the membership of Professor Dr. Manal Kamal Rashid, Professor Dr. Omar Farouk Nafi, Professor Dr. Abdel Samie Hassan Hammoud, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ghaid Hassan Hadi. The study aimed to find out whether diabetic patients suffer from imbalances in the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid and 5.4.1 inositol triphosphate, and whether this is related to insulin resistance. At the same time, we appreciate its importance in providing additional insights into early interventions that can halt the progression of diet-induced insulin resistance to more serious metabolic conditions. It included two sections, the first included the human aspect with a case study of 30 patients with type 2 diabetes, and 30 individuals predisposed to developing diabetes, matched in age, gender, and body mass index, with 30 healthy people as a control group. As for the second section, it included the experimental aspect with 40 laboratory animals. From female rats with insulin resistance, weight, blood sugar, insulin, and lipids were measured before and after treatment. The researcher concluded that low levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid affect insulin resistance, which may lead to disturbances in insulin balance and contribute to the onset of pre-diabetes and diabetes, in addition to that it may indicate that low levels of insulin-regulated aminopeptidase play a role alongside the sugar transporter. Type 4 in the sugar transport process. Myo-inositol and GABA can also be considered anti-hyperglycemic supplements for insulin-resistant rats, which may help prevent high blood sugar, especially in cases of insulin resistance. Myo-inositol can also play a role in treating high blood lipids.
