The department of Microbiology was established in 1927 and was considered an academic one in 1958. The first head of the department was Prof. Ahmed Sameem Al-Saffar and many professors followed after that.
Current Head of the Department of Microbiology is Prof. Shatha Farouk Abdullah.
The department of microbiology is responsible for preparing competent physicians in diagnosing and treating micro-pathogens and immune disorders, training experts and researchers in isolating, diagnosing and detecting mutations associated with bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi in modern ways that keep pace with global scientific development, and to find solutions for the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.
Promote integrated education with other basic and clinical departments in microbiology and immunology, benefit from the development of treatments against infectious and immune diseases, and raise the level of teaching and joint research activities with other departments inside and outside the college, and in modern ways to keep pace with scientific progress to meet the needs of society and to improve human health.
- Preparing and training students of the College of Medicine in order to keep pace with the increasing number of students and the continuous development of the department.
- Preparing and training Iraqi Board students in the department of Pathology / microbiology and clinical immunology and teaching Iraqi and Arab board students from other specialties.
- Review and develop curricula that meet the needs and expectations of society and make them relevant and adaptable to changing needs in the field of microbiology and immunology.
- Embark, promote and develop innovative high-quality research protocols in microbiology and immunology.
- Enhance cooperation with other higher education departments in the evaluation student’s assessments and supervision inside and outside the college.
- Providing scientific consultations to the Ministry of Health to serve the community, such as participating in advisory committees for vaccines, immunization, viral hepatitis, polio, influenza, and laboratory materials.
