About the Library

The Library of the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad is the largest and oldest medical library in Iraq. It was established with the founding of the college in 1927 and is considered the mother library for all the libraries of the medical group that were established later.

The library is located in Bab Al-Muadham area within the medical complex that includes the College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry affiliated with the University of Baghdad, in addition to the Iraqi Ministry of Health and a number of government hospitals such as Baghdad Teaching Hospital, the Specialized Surgery Hospital, and many specialized medical centers.

The library was part of the college buildings until 1991, after which it was moved outside the college building (due to the urgent need for expansion), to occupy its new location near the Iraqi Board of Medical Specialties on the one hand and the teaching hospital of the College of Dentistry on the other hand. It consists of two floors and its area is 2,107 m². The ground floor represents storage for books, magazines, and old periodicals. As for the first floor, it includes a number of halls in addition to the administration room. The halls are:

  • Computer and Internet Hall
  • Indexing and Classification Hall
  • Reading Hall for postgraduate students
  • The Great Reading Hall
  • Loan Hall
  • Theses and Dissertations Hall
  • Audio-visual Hall
  • Lecture Hall
