The College of Medicine organizes a scientific symposium on the future prospects of pharmacogenetics The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, organized the scientific symposium entitled “Future Prospects and Development in Pharmacogenetics,” presented by the lecturer in the Pharmaceuticals Branch, Dr. Zainab Ghaleb Aliwi, in Al-Kindi Hall on Monday morning, the nineteenth of February. The symposium, which was attended by academic elite from the college’s teachers and researchers, aimed to learn about the latest developments in pharmacogenetics, and the method of conducting the tests required to determine the optimal treatment for the patient and the best use of the drug. The topics of the symposium reviewed the concepts of pharmacogenetics and its history, and clarified the genetic differences in the enzymes responsible for making drugs and stopping their effect in the body, as well as the most important websites and health organizations that provide information and guidance about this science and explained how to conduct a pharmacogenetics test. At the conclusion of the scientific symposium, the researcher presented recommendations that included the necessity of introducing this type of test in Iraqi health institutions because it is currently available in a large number of countries in the world, and because of the accuracy it provides in determining the appropriate medication for the patient. She also indicated the need to take into account factors such as the patient’s age and mass and his gender, It also highlighted the importance of providing financial support to researchers to support their research in this field, while providing practical training and adequate education for workers in hospitals and health sectors in general about the importance of knowing the use of pharmacogenetics in making medical decisions based on the patient’s genetic map and according to his health needs.
