The College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad registered a new patent entitled “Design and manufacture of a mask to stabilize the patient’s head in radiosurgery treatments using the Gamma Knife Icon device” by the inventor, Assistant Professor Dr. Munir Khamas Faraj, teaching assistant in the specialty of neurosurgery. The medical patent was granted to Dr. Munir and his medical team by the Ministry of Planning - Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control on June 2, 2024. The new innovative invention method is described as economical to stabilize the patient's head during radiotherapy using the Gamma Knife device as an alternative to the expensive imported mask used in this treatment. Available plastic materials were used and a 3D printing of the patient’s face was made, taking appropriate measurements to place this mask and attach it to the Gamma Knife device as an alternative to the imported mask, which costs up to five hundred dollars. While the cost of the materials from which the local mask is made does not exceed four dollars only. This new mask proved its efficiency using a movement test during installation, and this test is also approved to measure the efficiency of the original mask included with the device.
