Under the patronage and in the presence of the Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Ameen Abdul-Hassan Maneh Al-Alwany, a specialized scientific workshop was held entitled “The Journey of a Colorectal Cancer Patient: From Books to Clinical Practice.”
The workshop was organized by the Department of Surgery in cooperation with the Iraqi Federation of Medical Students (IFMSA-Iraq) and aimed to bridge the gap between academic and theoretical education and clinical and practical application.
The workshop primarily targeted undergraduate medical students from various Iraqi universities, as well as recent medical graduates, to enhance their medical skills. Scientific lectures were presented by a select group of professors and specialist instructors from within and outside the college.
The workshop was held in the Continuing Education Hall at the College of Medicine on Thursday, August 20, 2026. It included a welcoming address delivered by the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies, Professor Dr. Mohammed Basil Ismail, on the occasion of the scientific meeting on “Colorectal Cancer.”
The opening remarks included a welcome to fellow physicians, students, and distinguished guests on behalf of the college deanship. The speaker highlighted rectal cancer as a vital and pressing medical topic in the fields of oncology and surgery.
The remarks also conveyed a message to board-certified physicians, commending their commitment to staying abreast of the latest therapeutic and diagnostic advancements as leaders in the medical field. The speakers also praised the students for their passion for learning and viewed the workshop as an opportunity to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and clinical practice.
The workshop’s scientific program featured lectures presented by a select group of professors and specialist instructors:
Dr. Ahmed Aqeel Shaker: He discussed the role of surgery in treating colorectal cancer, reviewing the latest surgical techniques and interventions.
Dr. Mariam Issa: She presented on colorectal cancer: a comprehensive approach in radiology, emphasizing the importance of radiological diagnosis and its role in determining disease stages.
Dr. Roaa Bahaa El-Din: She addressed the topic of colorectal cancer screening: who, when, and how? She discussed early detection strategies and their established mechanisms.
