The Women’s Affairs Unit, in cooperation with the Civil Defense Unit at the College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, conducted a two-day training course entitled “Strategies for Self-Defense and Personal Safety.” The course was organized as part of the College’s efforts to promote a culture of safety and preventive awareness and to develop essential skills for appropriately responding to emergency situations in both workplace and home environments.

The first day of the course featured a training workshop on the fundamentals of first aid, delivered through two main components. The first focused on first aid in the home environment, addressing how to respond to injuries and sudden accidents that may occur at home, as well as the importance of prompt intervention and taking appropriate action during the initial minutes following an incident. Such measures can help minimize complications and protect the injured person until specialized medical assistance becomes available.

The second component focused on the clinical aspects of first aid, particularly the appropriate management of pregnant women and critical and emergency cases. Participants were introduced to key initial procedures that should be followed when sudden complications occur, with emphasis on the importance of rapid assessment, maintaining the safety of the injured or ill person, and avoiding inappropriate practices that could worsen the individual’s health condition.

The workshop emphasized that familiarity with the principles of first aid is an essential skill whose importance extends beyond healthcare professionals. It is a vital competency that can contribute to saving lives, reducing the severity of injuries and complications, and enhancing an individual’s ability to respond calmly and appropriately when confronted with emergency situations.

The second day of the course featured training on self-defense and personal safety skills, including an introduction to key principles and techniques that can help individuals protect themselves and avoid potentially dangerous situations. The training also aimed to enhance situational awareness, promote rapid assessment of circumstances, and encourage appropriate responses that can reduce the likelihood of harm.

The course also addressed key principles of civil defense and public safety, including measures for preventing accidents, fires, and potential hazards. Emphasis was placed on complying with safety procedures in workplaces, maintaining the readiness of safety and emergency equipment, and promoting a culture of safety within homes by adopting measures that contribute to protecting individuals and property.

This course forms part of the College of Medicine – University of Baghdad’s commitment to supporting educational and training programs that contribute to creating a safer and more informed environment and strengthening a culture of preparedness and prevention. These efforts reinforce the principle that awareness is the first line of defense and that proper preparedness can make a decisive difference in times of emergency.
