A National Seminar to Promote the Prevention of Violent Extremism
The Media and Government Communication Division at the College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, organized an awareness-raising dialogue seminar in cooperation with the Higher National Committee for Combating Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism, entitled:
“The Role of Iraqi Universities and Colleges in National Strategies to Combat Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism: The College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad as a Model.”
The seminar was attended by Mr. Ahmed Naji Al-Shammari, Secretary of the Higher National Committee for Combating Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism, who delivered an informative lecture addressing the importance of promoting a culture of peace and a sense of citizenship. He emphasized that confronting extremism is not limited to security measures, but begins with raising awareness and fostering moderate thinking within educational institutions.
Al-Shammari noted that universities and colleges play one of the most significant roles in combating extremism, given their direct influence on shaping young people’s awareness, promoting critical thinking, and reinforcing the values of moderation and national belonging. He further explained that early prevention within the university environment constitutes the first line of defense, preceding any remedial or security intervention.
The seminar also addressed the importance of partnerships between academic institutions and relevant national bodies, contributing to the implementation of the national strategy for combating violent extremism and strengthening integrated efforts among various state institutions.
Through this event, the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad reaffirmed its academic and societal commitment to nurturing a well-informed generation that embraces dialogue, rejects hatred, and regards knowledge and professional ethics as fundamental foundations for strengthening social peace.
The seminar forms part of a series of awareness-raising activities through which the College seeks to contribute to fostering a culture of moderation and supporting national efforts aimed at protecting society and enhancing its security and stability.
