An Institutional Vision for Developing Medical Competencies and Establishing an Advanced Training System
The College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad held its tenth Council session under the chairmanship of Professor Dr. Ameen Abdul-Hassan Manea Al-Alwany, with the attendance of the Council members. The session addressed a number of academic and strategic issues related to the development of medical education and the advancement of the College’s standing at both the national and international levels.
Key Issues Discussed
Post-Board Programmes and the Development of an Integrated Academic Plan
Post-Board study programmes and specialized diploma programmes were among the principal items on the agenda. The Council discussed mechanisms for establishing specialized programmes that respond to the actual needs of Iraq’s healthcare sector while remaining aligned with global developments in medical education.
The Council emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive academic plan that includes:
- Identifying priority specialties based on healthcare needs assessments and relevant indicators.
- Engaging national and international expertise in supervision and evaluation.
- Establishing clear admission mechanisms to ensure the recruitment of highly qualified candidates.
The Dean of the College emphasized that these programmes represent a strategic step toward strengthening the College’s role as a leading academic and scientific centre for preparing specialized medical leaders, thereby contributing positively to the quality of healthcare services provided to the community.
Developing the Student Training System
The Council also discussed students’ clinical and skills-based training programmes, emphasizing the need to update training plans in accordance with contemporary standards of competency-based medical education. The discussion also highlighted the importance of expanding opportunities for practical training within healthcare institutions and strengthening partnerships with health-sector organizations to ensure an integrated and effective training environment.
The Council reiterated its continued commitment to enhancing academic and institutional performance and preserving the longstanding academic reputation of Baghdad College of Medicine in a manner befitting its distinguished faculty members, students, and graduates.
Supporting World Health Organization Programmes
As part of efforts to strengthen academic engagement and international collaboration, the Council emphasized the importance of supporting programmes implemented in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO). It also stressed the need to align educational and training activities with internationally recognized standards, thereby benefiting students and graduates and providing them with broader opportunities for professional development and research.
Collaboration with Advanced Global Educational Platforms
The Council hosted Ms. Suja Amer, who delivered a detailed presentation on a modern educational platform designed to contribute to the advancement of medical education within the College. She explained that the platform incorporates a comprehensive question bank that enables faculty members to develop standardized examinations based on precise academic classifications. It also provides students with an interactive learning environment through which they can assess their academic performance and prepare for examinations more effectively.
The Council members highlighted the importance of this initiative in supporting digital transformation, enhancing the quality of academic assessment, and establishing a culture of e-learning as an essential component of the educational process.
The session concluded with an emphasis on the need for the forthcoming phase to be guided by integrated institutional action based on strategic planning, the development of high-quality academic programmes, and the promotion of innovation in education and training.
