The Faculty of Medicine is discussing a diploma research in the field of diagnostic radiology

A discussion was held on the research of the Diagnostic Radiology Diploma student, Dr. Sumaah AbdulSami AbdulLateef, titled 'A Comparison Between Two-Dimensional Mammography and Digital Breast Tomosynthesis in the Assessment of Breast Lesions.' The examination committee, which took place in the postgraduate studies hall at the college on Monday, July 17, 2023, was composed of Dr. Tariq Ibrahim Al-Obaidi as the chairman, and members including Mariam Issa AbdulQadir and Tara Farouk Kareem, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Heba Mohammed Abdulwahid. The aim of this study is to compare two-dimensional mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis in assessing breast lesions among patients. The method included a prospective group conducted at the Oncology Teaching Hospital in the Medical City Complex in Baghdad over a period of 8 months, from October 2022 to May 2023. The study included 100 women with pathological lesions categorized as BIRADS IV, III, and V, who underwent digital mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis. The diagnosis was confirmed using FNA (Fine Needle Aspiration) or US-guided core needle biopsy. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS version 25. Statistical comparisons were conducted using the Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test, with significance defined as a P-value less than 0.05. Results indicated that most patients (45) were in the age group of 40-49 years. A clustered mass was found in 54 cases on mammography, while more masses were detected on DBT (72 cases). The researcher concluded that tomosynthesis surpasses mammography in terms of sensitivity and specificity across all breast densities, particularly at higher densities. It is advantageous as it removes overlapping breast tissues, providing higher accuracy of internal breast content, in contrast to mammography, which produces two-dimensional images. This is anticipated to lead to reduced false-positive results, recalls, and breast radiological perspectives, as well as decreased radiation exposure and costs. The research was accepted and awarded the grade of distinction.
