On Monday, the nineteenth of February, the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad discussed a master’s thesis in the field of physiology entitled (The relationship of changes occurring in quantitative brain planning, clinical characteristics, and cognitive ability of migraine patients in the period between headache attacks), by the student Raghad Alaa Abdel Karim. The discussion committee, which was headed by Prof. Dr. Najib Hassan Muhammad, and supervised by Prof. Dr. Hanan Louay Al-Omari, and the membership of: A.M.D. Zuhair Abdul Ghafour Maysar, A.M. Dr. Zainab Hassan Hashem. The study aims to evaluate quantitative changes in the electroencephalogram (EEG) in patients suffering from migraine compared to healthy people, and to evaluate their relationship to cognitive ability and clinical characteristics of the patients. The study concluded that the absolute power of both theta and beta delta waves is lower in migraine patients compared to healthy people, while the absolute power of alpha waves increases in patients compared to healthy people. The study demonstrated a negative relationship between the MoCA score and the absolute power of alpha waves, while the relationship was positive for beta waves. Alpha waves were also more reactive to EEG tasks in migraine patients with aura compared to patients without it. After conducting a public discussion of the scientific thesis, the researcher was awarded a grade of distinction, taking into account her use of scientific references and her defense of her thesis.
