On Thursday, July 18, 2024, the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad discussed the doctoral thesis entitled “Evaluating the improvement of diabetic foot ulcers using an aquarium containing carbon dioxide using peripheral arterial indicators” by the student Ghazwan Riyad Abdel Hamza. The thesis discussion committee, headed by Prof. Dr. Hanan Loay Al-Omary, and the membership of both Prof. Dr. Omar Farouk , Prof. Dr. Affan Ezzat Hassan, Dr. Muhanad Yahya Idris, Dr. Abdulameer Mohsen Hassan, and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nageeb Hassan Muhammad. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the effect of the effectiveness of carbon dioxide gas dissolved in water on diabetic patients with diabetic foot ulcers, by evaluating the improvement of the ulcers using peripheral arterial indicators such as Doppler ultrasound, the ankle brachial index, the vascular endothelial growth factor, and the tumor necrosis factor alpha. The study recommended combining treatment with water baths saturated with carbon dioxide gas with other treatments used for ulcers, such as advanced dressings and negative pressure therapy for ulcers. This method may have a greater impact on treating these ulcers. The researcher also stressed the importance of conducting long-term studies to track the progress of ulcer healing in diabetic foot ulcer patients who underwent treatment with water baths saturated with carbon dioxide gas, which provides collection and analysis of data on the speed of ulcer healing. The thesis was approved with a very good grade..
