As part of its ongoing efforts to develop and enhance the teaching staff, the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad, in collaboration with its Medical Education Department, organized a high-quality central lecture within the “Staff Development” lecture series. The lecture was attended by a select group of academics and representatives from the Iraqi Council for Accreditation of Medical Colleges.

The scientific event was held in Ibn al-Haytham Hall on Thursday, February 5, 2026. Professor Dr. Hilal al-Saffar delivered a lecture entitled: “Fifteen Years Shaping the Future of Medical Education: A Journey of Vision and Resilience.”

In his opening remarks, the lecturer reviewed the developmental journey of medical education in Iraq and globally over the past fifteen years, focusing on two key themes: “Strategic Vision” and “Resilience in the Face of Challenges.” He highlighted the major transformations in educational curricula, the integration of modern technologies, and the shift towards competency-based and outcomes-oriented education.

The lecture was distinguished by the presence of Professor Dr. Yusra Abdul Rahman Mahmoud, President of the National Council for Accreditation of Medical Colleges in Iraq, and several council members. This lent the event significant official and academic weight, and provided an opportunity for direct dialogue between the body overseeing quality standards and the faculty members responsible for the educational process. A large number of faculty members and researchers from the College of Medicine also attended, expressing their interest in learning about the latest perspectives in the field of medical education development.

The lecture concluded with practical recommendations and proposals for continuing the development process, emphasizing the necessity of investing in faculty as the cornerstone of any positive change, strengthening local and international partnerships, and aligning curricula with societal needs and rapid scientific advancements.

The Dean of the College of Medicine expressed her appreciation for the lecture’s content and the efforts invested in its preparation, considering it a qualitative leap in the faculty development program and a step towards raising the quality of medical education in Iraq to meet international standards.
