On Thursday, August 13, 2026, the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad hosted a scientific symposium entitled “Human Papillomavirus and Cervical Cancer,” held in the main conference hall, in cooperation with several Iraqi health and academic institutions.

The symposium focused on the latest scientific developments related to human papillomavirus (HPV), including its epidemiology, symptoms, and diagnostic methods, as well as vaccines and prevention strategies. It also addressed the importance of including HPV in the national immunization program to enhance prevention and early detection efforts for cervical cancer.

The Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Ameen Abdul-Hassan Maneh Al-Alwany, welcomed the researchers and participants at the Dean’s office. The Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Mohammed Basil Ismail, participated in the opening of the symposium and delivered a welcoming address, emphasizing the importance of integrating scientific and health efforts in combating preventable diseases.

The symposium included several specialized scientific lectures covering the global epidemiology of human papillomavirus (HPV), clinical manifestations in women, the national status of cervical cancer and its treatment in Iraq, as well as the HPV vaccine and laboratory aspects of its diagnosis.

The lectures were presented by Professor Dr. Fares Hassan Al-Lami, Professor Dr. Taghreed Khalil Al-Haidari, Assistant Professor Dr. Haider Baqir Al-Shammaa, Dr. Kamal Abdul-Razzaq Kadhim, and Dr. Huda Hilal Mohammed.

The symposium concluded with the honoring of the researchers and participants, affirming the role of the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad in supporting scientific research, strengthening health and academic partnerships, and promoting awareness of cervical cancer prevention and early detection.
